5:03 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Clippers leading the 8 – 5,743 Cleveland Cavaliers by only 1 (what? The Cavs only lost 45? Man. Seems low), and I’ve got that rumbly feeling in the pit of my stomach; the feeling you got when you KNEW you’d been screwing around in English and that your 6th period class is gonna show some absences that your folks didn’t know about, and that report card is on. It’s. Way. Trouble is brewing. The hard-luck Cavs not only lost LeBron, Shaq and Zydrunas last summer, they followed up by losing their self-respect to Miami in November, then their 3rd most legit NBAer Anderson Varejo, then the “face of the franchise” (ugly, ugly franchise) Mo Williams for HUGE chunks of the season. Add that up? Cavs have whipping boy status, one lonely win since November 30th, and a 26 game losing streak. I could field a team of NBA broadcasters, featruring butterball Barkley, creaky Reggie Miller, me, and my English Mastiff, I guarantee we wouldn’t lose 26 straight. It’s sad, but a perfect storm of suckitude brewed right on up in Quicken Loans Arena for Ceveland, and it is bitterly horrible.
So ANOTHER perfect storm is brewing right now- Blake Griffen is in the spotlight, Clips are coming off of an emotionally charged nationally televised game where they trounced the Knicks at MSG, Mo Williams is back after an extended absence from the linr-up due to injury, providing an emotional boost, and the Cavs are just plain playing on pride- NO ONE wants to lose like that, and the Cavs, pathetic as they are, are still professional athletes. SO. It’s the end of the 3rd. Clips are DOWN 83 – 80. 12 minutes left. THe Clippers do NOT want the ignomony of being the team to end this Cav losing streak. Randy Foye, break that magic bag out you flexed the other night in NY, man. 12 minutes. Get this win, Clippers. I think they pull it out, but man, that report card is COMING, I can feel it in my belly.

The Clippers made another quality addition to their coaching staff, announcing the hiring of Marc Iavaroni as an assistant to new Head Coach Vinny Del Negro.

Iavaroni is best known for his stint as the Memphis Grizzlies, where he went 33-90 before being fired midway through his second season. Prior to his time in Memphis, Iavaroni had developed a reputation as being a solid assistant coach, most notably in Phoenix, where he helped Mike D’Antoni with the “Seven Seconds or Less” approach that was (and still is) wildly successful in his time in Phoenix.

Iavaroni’s hiring is a fantastic step for the Clippers, who have now added three high-quality coaches to Del Negro’s staff. Iavaroni is largely credited with helping Amare Stoudemire develop into an elite power forward in Phoenix.

Prior to Phoenix, Iavaroni worked in Miami under Pat Riley and in Cleveland under Mike Fratello. He also worked as an assistant on Mike Krzyzewski’s staff for the 2006 FIBA World Championships and spent time as an instructor at Pete Newell’s famed Big Man Camp.

Iavaroni joins Dave Severns and Dean Demopoulos on Del Negro’s staff, which is expected to add one more name by the time training camp opens. Severns came with Del Negro from Chicago and Demopoulos was hired after his contract was not renewed in Portland, where he had previously been Nate McMillan’s lead assistant.
