Magic Johnson Responds to Donald Sterling Via Twitter

“It’s a shame.”

Those were Magic Johnson’s initial comments not the tape heard ’round the world. Halfway through the tape released by TMZ Sports that pegs blatant racism to Clippers owner Donald Sterling as he speaks with his former girlfriend, he mentions Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, noting that he doesn’t want his girlfriend to be seen with him on Instagram or at Clippers games.

“I think the fact that you admire [Magic] — I’ve known him well, and he should be admired,” Sterling replies. “And I’m just saying that it’s too bad you can’t admire him privately. And during your ENTIRE F****** LIFE, your whole life, admire him — bring him here, feed him, f*** him, I don’t care.”

“You can do anything. But don’t put him on an Instagram for the world to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games. OK?”

The next morning, Johnson took to Twitter to respond to Sterling’s comments, making a statement that he’d never appear at another Los Angeles Clippers game.

Considering all that’s said, you can’t blame Magic Johnson and with him responding publicly, rather it be directly from him or his public relations firm. You have to respect him as many would have bit their tongue in the situation, only speaking indirectly to the source of the problem or through sources found out by national publications.

It’s unclear what the league can actually do at the moment, but they’ve made a statement saying an investigation on Sterling’s comments is underway.

Hopefully with Magic Johnson taking the initiative in the situation, others will do the same, following his path. Letting Sterling get off easy and without a public backlashing from his cohorts and other popular figures can’t be done here.
