Report: Thunder Interested in Iman Shumpert, Clips-Knicks Deal Dependent on MRI

A possible MCL tear won’t stop the Iman Shumpert trade rumors. This time the Oklahoma City Thunder are involved:

It’s been no secret that the Thunder have been shopping starting guard Thabo Sefalosha whose contracts expires this season. Adding Shumpert, likely swallowing Shump’s $1.7 million contract in Eric Maynor’s trade exception, would give the Thunder a shooting guard of the future. He fits what Thabo does, defending well and hitting open jumpers. But injury is an issue here. Prior to the New Orleans game, Shump’s play had been borderline bad. With what was diagnosed as a MCL strain, an immediate improvement isn’t something you can bet on.

If the Knicks can get a first-round pick, albeit a late first-rounder for Shump, this would be a great move. Many will complain about where the pick will fall, likely around the 28 to 30 pick area, but just having a first rounder is a great thing for the Knicks. Since the new CBA took effect, the value of first-round picks has increased ten-fold. Teams are less willing to give them up for nothing and more willing to take on one along with a player that isn’t exactly good (that means you Raymond Felton). It’d provide the Knicks with trade flexibility going forward, and with the emergence of Tim Hardaway Jr., having another late rounder should excite Knick fans.

As far as the Clippers-Knicks trade goes, there isn’t a way this goes through. Shump injuring his knee last night was a possible red flag. This team doesn’t need more injured wings that can’t contribute on the court.

UPDATE (this appeared as I was writing this piece):

So, the Oklahoma City Thunder thing may not be a thing at all.
