NBA Trade Rumors: Clippers Are Interested in Evan Turner?

It is the word of Sam Amick of Fox Sports Ohio, so take this rumor lightly.

According to the aforementioned writer, the Los Angeles Clippers are interested in Philadelphia 76ers forward Evan Turner.

“Philadelphia has “stepped up” efforts to trade swingman Evan Turner, according to a report by SportingNews.com. As FOX Sports Ohio reported early in the season, the 76ers are also very open to moving forward Thaddeus Young and center Spencer Hawes. The Suns, Los Angeles Clippers and Atlanta Hawks are all especially intrigued, according to FSO sources.” (NBA Beat: With new commish, Seattle back on NBA radar)

Based on all other reports that refer to Philadelphia’s trade situation, a first-round pick is the key asset in acquiring Turner or any other marquee player on their roster.

Considering what the Clippers currently have at the small forward position, Matt Barnes in the starting lineup and Jared Dudley/Hedo Turkoglu playing reserve minutes, Turner would be a welcome upgrade well worth the first-round pick. On the season the former number two overall pick is averaging 18.1 points (career-high), 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals (career-high) per game, all career highs. He lacks the perimeter shooting and defense you’d want to play around the tandem of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, but his ability to create in the half-court must intrigue someone in the Clippers front office.

While the fit is slightly there, it’s doubtful that the Clippers have the assets to acquire Turner. The sought-after first-rounder the 76ers would obtain from the Clippers would hold little value as it’d likely be a top-20 something pick instead of being closer to the cream of the 2014 NBA Draft. Due to salary, a pick wouldn’t be enough. Is Reggie Bullock intriguing enough to swing the trade in Los Angeles’ favor? What about taking on Jared Dudley’s contract? The former seems likely, but the latter would force Sam Heinke to hang up the phone and never call back.

No matter what the Clippers attempt to throw out there, the ball is in Philly’s court. They’ll have several offers lined up as the trade dealing slowly approaches and whoever they choose will receive ET. Clippers can only hope if these rumors hold weight.
