The Los Angeles Clippers announced today that they have waived guard Maalik Wayns.
Wayns, 22, did not appear in a game for the Clippers in 2013-14 after missing the first 33 games of the season due to a torn left meniscus. According to the CBA, Wayns’ contract would have been guaranteed if he were on the roster past Tuesday January 7th. There is a slight possibility the Clippers could sign Wayns to a 10-day contract if he clears waivers, but with better options out there the chanced are very slim. According to multiple sources Chris Paul and Wayns have become very close friends, we shall see if that plays into that decision of bringing him back.
Wayns garnered up $320,189 for not having played a single moment in the NBA this season, not so bad if you ask me. Wayns averaged 3.3 points and 1.2 assists last season with the Clippers.
Doc Rivers and rest of the Clipper front office on the hunt for another point guard to fill in as a back up for Darren Collison while Chris Paul is out 3-5 weeks due to a separated shoulder which we will hear more about tomorrow once the MRI results are reported.
Marc Stein of ESPN first reported the news.
