Stein: Clippers Looking To Add Stephen Jackson

According to Marc Stein (and Ramona Shelburne) of ESPN, the Los Angeles Clippers are looking to bolster their wing depth by adding free agent Stephen Jackson:

Stein noted that Jackson could be signed as early as this week.

Considering the available options Doc Rivers was forced to choose from, Stephen Jackson is as good as it gets for the wing position. With J.J. Redick, Matt Barnes, and, most recently, Reggie Bullock out with injuries (Jared Dudley is also dealing with a lingering knee issue also), Jackson provides both three-point shooting, albeit he’s vastly overrated in this category, and a defensive presence on the wing.

He fits the Matt Barnes mold of a player. He’s hard-nosed and a pest on the defensive end. I could argue that his persona is more important to the this team than his actual talents. The effect that Kenyon Martin and Reggie Evans had on this team two years back, when they defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the 2012 playoffs, could be replicated by Captain Jack.

Jackson last played for the San Antonio Spurs during the 2012-13 before being released in April due to differences between he and Gregg Popvich, the Spurs head coach. During that season, Jackson averaged 6.2 points on 37 percent shooting (27 percent from three) and 2.8 rebounds in 55 games played before his letting go.

Stein also threw in a tidbit on how the Jackson signing could affect the Clippers pursuit of Lamar Odom.
