In the first quarter of tonight’s matchup between the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies, Tony Allen was ejected for… kicking Chris Paul in the face. Here’s the video (via @Maxamillion711):
This isn’t the norm in the NBA unless we’re talking Boston Celtics versus Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s. Looking at the play it’s clear the kick was unintentional. But an ejection via flagrant two had to happen due to the severity of the action. If not the NBA would be setting a poor precedent for all things physical in the future.
Physicality between these two teams is nothing we as NBA fans aren’t used to. They’ve eliminated each other in back-to-back playoff series. Zach Randolph and Blake Griffin have been involved in countless situations resulting in double-fouls and flagrants. The near-confrontation between Z-Bo and Matt Barnes after a tough playoff foul. To put it plainly, these teams don’t like each other much.
But this is next level. The rivalry lives on.
