From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports,
The Boston Celtics are deep in discussions with the Los Angeles Clippers on a blockbuster deal to send coach Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The final hurdle of a deal centers on the Clippers’ willingness to include guard Eric Bledsoe into a trade package with Boston, sources said.
Boston and Los Angeles are discussing a package that will send DeAndre Jordan and two first-round picks to the Celtics for Garnett and the right to hire Rivers as coach, sources said.
While the above are the most important factors of the rumored trade here are some tidbits mentioned within the piece:
- Kevin Garnett (BOS) would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Los Angeles Clippers.
- (Sources) While Clippers owner Donald Sterling has a known tendency of being “cheap”, he’d be willing to pay Doc Rivers the $7 million annual salary (Rivers has three-years, $21 million left in contract).
- Woj notes this deal could either be done in the next two days or completely fall apart.
Similar to the deal that sent Eric Gordon to the New Orleans Pelican for Chris Paul, the Clippers are trying their hardest to hold out on trade asset Eric Bledsoe. Ramona Shelburne of ESPN says the Celtics main priority in this deal is DeAndre Jordan, but getting Eric Bledsoe will give them another piece that could be moved around the trade deadline come next February.
Doc Rivers has made it his point that he doesn’t want to be around when the team decides to build around Rajon Rondo. While Rondo, Jared Sullinger, Jeff Green and Avery Bradley are a great place to start a re-build, Rivers wants no part in it.
As far as Paul Pierce is concerned, he isn’t mentioned in the above trade rumors. Larry Coon of CBAFaq.com pointed out that the numbers wouldn’t add up if the Clippers and Celtics attempted to trade Garnett and Pierce in the same trade and that they’d have to be separate deals. There’s also a chance that the Clippers sign Pierce if the Celtics decide to waive him.
