First reports come out that the Los Angeles Clippers brass has reached out to Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone.
Then former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott.
Now Yahoo! Sports NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the team has reached out to ESPN broadcaster and former New York Knicks head coach Jeff Van Gundy:
The Los Angeles Clippers reached out to Jeff Van Gundy to get a preliminary sense of his interest in discussing their head-coaching job, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Jeff Van Gundy has worked in broadcasting since leaving the Rockets in 2007. There was no discussion of setting up an interview, nor any real gauge of whether Van Gundy holds interest in the job, sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Those close to Van Gundy believe that he is open to considering a return to coaching for the right opportunity.
Considering Van Gundy turned down the opportunity to coach the Brooklyn Nets you have to wonder if this Clippers team is more of a “right opportunity” for him. Superstar player in Chris Paul (if re-signed), star in Blake Griffin and formidable pieces around the two of them. And if he feels the team needs to make a change they have a trade piece in Eric Bledsoe‘s who’s high on others list. That’s something he can’t do with the Nets.
But at this point everything is just conversation. They’ll likely speak to two or three more coaches (Brian Shaw, Lionel Hollins) before the official interviewing candidates for the job. No surprise if things are done right before the NBA draft.
