Anonymous sources have said that the Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly informed Coach Vinny Del Negro Tuesday that the team will pick up his contract option for the 2012-13 season.

Del Negro recently helmed the Los Angeles Clippers team with the best winning percentage in franchise history, a first round victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, their first Game 7 win on the road, and first season with 2 All-NBA selections.

The Clippers were then swept out of the 2nd round by a Spurs team that has now won 19 games in a row and looks like a contender. It was only the 2nd time since Sterling has owned the team that the Clippers have reached the conference semi-finals.

Clippers owner Donald Sterling, president Andy Roeser and vice president of basketball operations Neil Olshey decided to let Del Negro play out the 3rd year of his contract and have one more chance to see where Chris Paul and Blake Griffin can take the “Lob City” Clippers.

Del Negro led The Clippers were 40-26 during the lockout shortened 66-game season.

Del Negro’s job came under scrutiny after the Clippers lost three consecutive games in March. Then the Clippers turned things around and won 13 of their next 15 games.

In his two years as coach of the Clippers, Del Negro has a 72-76 record. Whether Del Negro is the man who can get the Clippers to their ultimate goal of getting to a championship is a legitimate question, but he will have one more year to prove to the Clippers’ brass that he is the long-term answer.
