Last night’s Los Angeles Clippers-Phoenix Suns match-up featured two of this generation’s best point guards at different points of their careers. Chris Paul is just entering his prime and basketball fans will hopefully have the opportunity to watch him work for many years. Nash on the other hand is a two-time league MVP who has had a roller-coaster career and slowly built his way into becoming one of the league’s best point guards and shooters.
They both control the game in such similar ways. They tend to try and distribute the ball in the first 3 quarters and then take over in the 4th if their teams need their scoring ability. They are both quick, know how to cut to the basket, hit cutters, and seem to have a preternatural feel for where the ball should go in the offensive flow.
For any point guard training academies out there, just go ahead and send a tape of last night’s game to all your students and let them enjoy. Nash and Paul’s back and forth last night was incredibly fun to watch, and Nash eventually came out ahead, but it was a thrilling battle. Nash’s 4th quarter floater eventually took the lead for good, and the Suns improved their playoff chances greatly.
With the win, the Suns pulled within a half game of the Western Conference Playoff 8th seed. With their loss, the Clippers slipped to a full game behind the Lakers, and will hope for a Lakers’ loss tonight against the Spurs.
