Clippers record currently stands at 10-23, 6 games out of the 8th spot in the western conference. The Clippers could use a really huge surge right now, playing well in January and gaining momentum into that dreaded 11 game road trip in February. Tonight’s game certainly didn’t help.
The Clippers have just gotten swept by the Utah Jazz 0-3. All three games, the great 3rd quarter collapse was in effect and completely decimated the Clippers. Tonight, the Clippers was only able to score 13 points in the 3rd quarter against the Jazz 30 points. Shots were not falling and the Clippers could not get a field goal in until around I believe the 7 minute mark of that quarter. Mike Smith had a comment on how Jerry Sloan does not make adjustments during halftime, he just yells at the team to play better. It worked so far for all 3 games, these 2 teams played against each other. Maybe Vinny Del Negro needs to yell louder to get his team to play harder and come out of halftime not looking like pieces of poo.
Gordon Hayward also decided to have a career game tonight scoring 17 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. All of his points came in the second half, most of it during the 3rd quarter. For all those panicking, no, Hayward was not the better option during the draft. Tonight’s game was simply a phenomenon that usually happens when teams play the Clippers. One random player goes insane mood and put up great stats for their fantasy owners.
The Jazz also out rebounded the Clippers, 42 rebounds to 34. They were able to grab 15 offensive rebounds too, getting a handful of second chance plays. DeAndre Jordan did pretty bad on the boards tonight, only grabbing 5. Al Jefferson has that big body that is effective for boxing out. DJ’s long arms could not reach over the giant Al Jefferson.
Clippers were never able to rally back in the 4th quarter and I was hoping Eric Gordon would do what he did in Utah but it didn’t happen. All I saw in the final minute of the game was Baron Davis desperately trying to get the ball to Blake Griffin and Blake Griffin hoping to close the game. I still believe Eric Gordon has a lot to do before he can officially be called our closer (like less turnovers), but when down by 10 at the last moments of the game, I would rather give the ball to him instead of Griffin, hoping that everything goes right and he can score automatically.
Aminu had a great first half, making 3 threes in a row and even getting a coast to coast highlight dunk. It’s a shame that he was a non factor in the second half. The Clippers needed a scoring punch and he couldn’t bring it. His 8 rebounds is really encouraging though and seemed to be a natural skill for him. I sense greatness for the Chief in the future. For now, he’s still another Indian. I kind of wish he doesn’t always have that droopy face though, but I’ll live with that.
Next game is this Sunday against the Atlanta Hawks at noon. Blake Griffin going against Josh Smith will be an interesting matchup because both of them are known as well regarded dunkers. I’m not sure if Joe Johnson is still injured or not but if he is, then Eric Gordon can run circles this Sunday. Here’s hoping for win #11!
