ESPN has been running a series of articles where 50+ experts are surveyed about the upcoming season. Today they put out the results to two of those surveys: What teams are most likely to be in turmoil and What teams will have the biggest turnaround? These should be two completely different sets of teams, one going up, the other down. Yet one team is on both lists. Yup, yer good ol’ reliable Clippers. They came in 4th on the Turmoil list:
Blake Griffin comes into the NBA with all the right attributes. But he’s joining the Clippers, a franchise that historically slobbers on the promising and leaves them reeking of defeat. Will coach Mike Dunleavy be able to keep a future star’s development on the right track if the veterans revert to losing habits and me-first play? Check back after the first month.
And 3rd on the Biggest Turnaround:
What a difference a Blake Griffin makes. In 2008-09, the Clippers clearly were a team in turmoil — they had injury woes, an underachieving roster and front-office drama. This season, many believe Griffin’s arrival could catapult the Clips into the West playoff race. But even if that doesn’t end up being the case, there’s renewed hope in Clipper Nation, which already is a huge reversal for the league’s laughingstock.
Welcome to the split-personality that is Clipper fandom. The one unfortunate thing is that even though these articles list all the ESPN guys who participated, they don’t indicate who specifically voted for what. It would be fun to see if any of the same experts voted for the Clips on both lists. ‘Cuz honestly, I could understand that.
